How to Add Film Grain to a Photograph Using Adobe Photoshop

If you are interested in a quick way to add an artistic feel or look to your photograph, you may consider adding the film grain effect. This is easy to accomplish, using Adobe Photoshop.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Open Adobe Photoshop, and scan you photograph. If you do not know how to do this, see my article “How to Create a High Quality Image Using Adobe Photoshop.”
Step2
Give you photograph a name, and save your work.
Step3
Go to the top menu selections for Filter. Choose Artistic, then Film Grain.
Step4
In the Pop-up Window, use the hand tool to drag the image to an area of it you will want to preview while you select options.
Step5
Click on the draggable arrow under “Grain.” Slide it back and forth to increase and decrease the obviousness of the grain.
Step6
When you get it to the level that you like, click on the “Highlight Area” draggable arrow to increase or decrease the level of grain in the highlights of the image.
Step7
When you get the highlight level to how you want them, click on the “Intensity” draggable arrow to increase or decrease the size of the grain in the image.
Step8
Click OK, and save your work.
