Writing a sympathy card can be very hard. You want the recipient to know you are thinking of them but want to make sure you say the right thing at a very sensitive time. Here are some tips on writing a sympathy card that is sincere and learn some proper etiquette for this situation.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pen
  • Scrap Paper
  • Card or Stationary
  1. Step 1

Keep the message relatively short. Practice what you would like to write on some scrap paper so you don't mess up your card or waste stationary.

  2. Step 2

If you knew the deceased person well, express how much that person meant to you. Sentiments like "Jerry was so special to me and I will miss him greatly", "Uncle Gerald was so much fun and will be greatly missed" or
"Allan was one of my best friends and I will always miss him" work well.

  3. Step 3

If you didn't know the deceased very well, keep the sympathy message short and simple. An appropriate thing to say would be "We're sorry for your loss, our thoughts and prayers are with you."

  4. Step 4

Sign your first and last name using any variation of the following:

    *With Love, Andy Freeman
    *Sincerely, Sherri and Doug Jackson
*Our Prayers are with you, Don Smith and Family

Even if you know the recipient very well, include your full name in case they get multiple sympathy cards from people with the same first name.

  5. Step 5

If the sympathy card is for a close friend to you and your family, you might be comfortable writing something like "Dear David and Sue,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
We are always here for you.

With Love, Don and Joan Jones and Family"

  6. Step 6

If someone you know has recently lost his/her father, write something simple like "Please accept our condolences on the loss of your father.
Our Deepest Sympathy, The Knapp Family"

  7. Step 7

Arnold will forever remain in our hearts and memories.

    Love Jason and Ann Thorpe

  8. Step 8

For the loss of a deceased aunt or uncle, write "In loving memory of Aunt Fay, she will be missed dearly. With Love Josh and Nicole Parks"

  9. Step 9

If you are writing a sympathy card on behalf of the office staff, write something like "With deepest sympathy for your loss. The Staff at Overlake Dental"

  10. Step 10

Another way for Co-Workers to share their sympathies is by sending a simple card that says "Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Your friends at Tullys- Blake, Sarah, Heidi, Scott and Trista"

Tips & Warnings
  • Frequently used phrases include:
  • Our thoughts and prayers are with you
  • With deepest Sympathy
  • Please accept our condolences
  • Jerry will always be in our hearts and memories
  • I am sorry for your loss
  • Keep it short and simple
  • Just remember to be warm and sincere
  • If you have been through the same situation, let them know you are just a phone call away.
  • If you want to send a bigger gesture, send the sympathy card along with a nice gift basket.
  • Avoid phrases that can come across as insensitive such as:
  • Time will heal all wounds
  • It was her time to move on
  • Everything happens for a reason
  • Avoid giving advice on how to heal or deal

on 10/21/2008 Mourn not thy weeping heart.
With grace, I exit but without sorrow.
I left thy soul with time on borrow,
Waiting for thee until thy part.

Without the touch, I embrace thee
and see the message in thane eyes
I give to Thee my love infinity
yet that is not enough as time goes by.

Rushing in yet quickly left
Measured are the years, and yet
Forever seems not long enough
like loving you for just a moment.

If love must be measured in life,
let it be for endurance and not the sorrow.
I shall believe in enduring love
and with thee, there will be the morrow.
