Things You'll Need:
- Shovel
- Small section of fencing (optional)
- Small, open space
-
Step 1
New Compost HeapCompost does best in a hole in the ground, or inside a surround. Some retailers offer a tub or container for composting, but these can be limiting. You can use a tarp or old blanket if you maintain the compost pile by turning it every week during the height of the summer season.
-
Step 2
Dig a hole about 3 to 4 feet in diameter, turning the soil over until it is loose. Don't take the soil out, just leave it for the biological waste to be mixed in.
-
Step 3
Take any type of biological waste you have, such as leftover food or leaves. Dump the waste you gathered in Step 2 into the loose earth of your compost pile. Mix it well and place a tarp over the entire hole. Weigh it down at the corners with bricks or rocks. The tarp is there so loose leaves or food won't blow away.
-
Step 4
Keep adding biodegradable waste on a regular basis. Always turn the soil when you do or turn it at least once a week. In a few weeks, you the waste will turn into soil through a decaying process. Use the new soil to fertilize and revitalize your garden.
