How to Compress a File Using WinZip

WinZip is a powerful yet easy to use file compression software. Though it is not free, many people have this software and would like to use it. These few simple steps take the work out of compressing a file.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • WinZip
  1. Step 1

    Start the Winzip application and click on the New icon in the upper left hand corner of the main window.

  2. Step 2

    Chose where you would like to save your zip file when it is complete. At this point you name the finished file, before adding files to the archive.

  3. Step 3

    A new window automatically opens, where you can add a file to be compressed, once you have named the file.

  4. Step 4

    Continue to add files by clicking on the "Add" icon, once you have picked a file to add to the zipped archive. As you place files within the "Add files" window, there are automatically compressed and added to the original named file that was named in the second step.

  5. Step 5

    When all the files have been added click on the "File" menu, and chose close Archive. At this point the archive is compressed and ready to send to a remote computer.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many viruses are sent via the zip file format. When receiving a zip file from some unknown source be sure to check the file with anti-virus software before opening the archive.
