WinZip is a powerful yet easy to use file-compression application. Although this software is not free, many people have it installed on their Windows PCs. If you have not used this application before, learn how a few simple steps take the work out of compressing a file.

      Start WinZip by clicking the shortcut on your desktop. Alternately, launch WinZip from the Windows Start menu. Click the “Start” button, type “winzip” in the search box and press “Enter.”

      Click on the “New “icon in the upper left corner of the WinZip application window.

      Select a destination folder for your compressed ZIP file. You name the file before adding files to the archive. A new window opens.

      Compress a file and add it to the archive by clicking on a file to select it, and then click on the "Add" icon on the application toolbar.

      Continue to add files by selecting files and clicking the "Add" icon. As you place files in the "Add Files" window, they are compressed and added to the archive that you named earlier.

      Click "File" and select “Close Archive” when you are finished adding files. You can now email the archive to a remote computer or copy it to a storage device, such as an external hard drive.

Tips & Warnings

  • Viruses are commonly hidden within ZIP files. When receiving such a file from an unfamiliar source, always scan the file with antivirus software before opening the archive.
