How to Play F Major Blues Scale on the Guitar

Playing a blues scale in the first position is a good way to learn the basics of guitar soloing.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    The strings on the guitar are number top to bottom as follows 1 through 6. The first string is the E, or low E. Place your finger on the first fret of the 1 string. Pick down.

  2. Step 2

    Place your third finger on the third fret, and pick up.

  3. Step 3

    Place your index finger on the first fret of the 2nd string and pick downward.

  4. Step 4

    Place your third finger on the third fret of the 2nd string and pick upward

  5. Step 5

    Continue to the 3rd string, then 4th, on the first then third frets.

  6. Step 6

    On the 5th string, move up to the second fret, then the fourth fret. Picking the string down, then up.

  7. Step 7

    On the 6th string place finger on the second fret and pick downward, then place your finger on the fourth fret and pick up.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to do this scale faster each time, while pressing close to, but not on, the metal fret.
