Air filters should be changed every 12,000 miles or every year, and even more often in dusty areas. Most are replaced with another disposable air filter. However, there’s a better alternative – a reusable air filter. While these can cost two to five times more than a disposable filter, they’ll be less expensive in the long run because they can last the life of a vehicle. Changing to a reusable filter saves energy, materials, and landfill space. Reusable air filters also save fuel and offer better performance.

Things You'll Need:

  • Reusable air filter
  1. Step 1

Purchase a reusable air filter. K&N Engineering and Fram sell models for most vehicles.

  2. Step 2

Remove the air filter. Clean any dirt and debris from the filter housing.

  3. Step 3

    Install a new reusable filter.

  4. Step 4

If you use a reusable filter on an engine with a carburetor, you might have to adjust the carburetor jets for improved airflow. The engine management system for modern engines will usually adjust for the increased airflow automatically.

  5. Step 5

Reusable filters usually come with "Do Not Discard" stickers that can be placed on the outside of the filter housing. If someone else changes your filters, tell them to clean rather than discard the filter.

  6. Step 6
Reusable filters must be periodically cleaned and recharged.

Reusable air filters do have to be cleaned and recharged periodically. Follow the filter manufacturer’s instructions. Manufacturers recommend using their own service kits for cleaning and re-oiling their filters. These are designed for a particular filter technology. Using other products can degrade performance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Reusable air filter are direct replacements for factory installed air filters and are “smog legal” in all states. Vehicle warrantees are typically not affected.
  • Reusable filters are an investment since they cost two to five times more than a disposable filter. Make sure you'll be keeping your car for a while before spending the extra money.
