How to Find the Best Food Cart in New York City

The ubiquitous food cart found on many New York City street corners peddling hot dogs and gyros is a staple of many diners on the run as well as those on a budget. Ordinarily this is food as fuel, derided by gourmands who never dream of deigning to ingest street food. But not all food carts are created equally. One food cart is renowned above all others for the deliciousness of its fare, the size of its portions and the value of its prices.

1. The food cart is located at the southwest corner of W. 53rd Street and 6th Ave. in Midtown Manhattan right across the street from the Hilton Hotel. The cart is there seven days a week, only at night, and begins serving at approximately 7:30 p.m. although the line begins to form around 7:00 p.m.
2. The cuisine is Middle-Eastern and for $6.00 you get a combination of marinated, chopped beef, chicken and lamb over orange Afghan rice with pita slices and a green salad. The meal comes with a tangy yogurt/tahini sauce and fiery hot sauce on the side.
3. There are benches where you can sit down and eat right next to the cart but the ambiance leaves something to be desired. Better to walk three blocks south and enjoy your meal on the benches outside Rockefeller Center.
4. Prepare to wait in line about twenty minutes to half-an-hour to get your food but it's worth it. The cart serves until 4:00 a.m.
