NOTEPAD is that little text-editor program that has always been part of Windows, but is generally overlooked in favor of WORD, WORDPAD, or other fancier word-processing programs. But NOTEPAD has a few very specific features that you can use to your advantage.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A PC with the Windows operating system installed(NOTEPAD comes with Windows).

Step1
The first feature of NOTEPAD - because it does not allow special formatting, this means you can use this to REMOVE all formatting from a copied web page, and leave only the words.
EXAMPLE: go to a web page with some text you want to copy, then use (CTRL+A) to highlight all of the page text, then copy it (CTRL+C), then paste it (CTRL+V) into NOTEPAD and notice that only the words remain.
Step2
Example of LOG feature with timestamp Another feature - The .LOG allows you to create an automatic log file for a simple diary, without having to key in the current date each time.
Open a NOTEPAD screen and type in .LOG, then close the file and name it.
Now, each time you open this file, you will automatically have a new time-stamp.
Step3
Finally - use NOTEPAD to copy part of a WORD or EXCEL file and remove all special formatting, and leave only the words.
EXAMPLE: Copy some formatted text from a Word document (CTRL+A) to highlight all of the page text, then copy it (CTRL+C), then paste it (CTRL+V) into NOTEPAD and notice that only the words remain.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pin the NOTEPAD program to your Start menu to make it easily accessible at a click (see related article).
