Bringing home a newborn baby is an exciting time for parents. However if a newborn' s disposition suddenly turns her into a nonstop screaming machine, don't panic. Here are some practices to try.
Burp or "bubble" baby after she drinks two ounces of formula. This prevents painful gas buildup in her tummy.
Step2
Consult pediatrician if baby is spitting up all the formula after a feeding. Some babies have more immature digestive systems and may do better on different formulas.
Step3
Wrap or swaddle baby in warm receiving blanket. This is said to somewhat imitate the feeling of being in the womb.
Step4
Some experts believe adhering to a schedule is correct. But if demand feeding works, so be it.
Step5
Rock baby gently. A rocking chair reduces strain on parent.
Step6
A warm bath with a lavender bath product will help relax baby. A gentle baby massage with a lavender baby lotion will have the same effect.
Step7
Try holding baby in different positions. Put baby on your shoulder, supporting her head and neck. Hold baby away from you supporting her with your forearm. Lay baby across your knees on a receiving blanket, suspending baby's tummy downward. In all positions, gently pat and rub baby's back from top to tailbone, this may bring up excess gas.
Step8
Be patient. This stage will pass. Enlist family and friends to help out so frazzled parents can have a break.
Tips & Warnings
In all positions, hold baby firmly. If baby senses insecurity, she will become tense and cry even more. If all else fails, put baby in her carrier and take her for a ride. Those infant chairs that have battery operated vibration work well too.
If your newborn shows any unusual symptoms: fever or stiff neck, do not hesitate to call your pediatrician.
