A double fisherman's knot is often used in rock climbing to tie two ropes of equal or different diameters together. Here is a simple step-by-step article on how to properly tie this important knot.

  1. Step 1
    Step 1: start with ropes laying parallel

    Lay the two ends of climbing rope side by side in opposite directions as pictured.

  2. Step 2

    Take one end of rope and pass it over the other and then around the back as shown.

  3. Step 3

    Pass the rope around the back of the rope you just crossed again as shown, making an "x" on the top of the rope.

  4. Step 4

    Pass the end of the rope you've been looping through the "x" you just formed, as shown. Pull moderately tight.

  5. Step 5

    Repeat steps 1-4 as shown with the other end of the climbing rope.

  6. Step 6

    Pull knots snugly up against one another and pull ends of rope to tighten.

  7. Step 7

    This is what your finished knot should look like.
