Many people don't know it, but it is possible to kayak from the base of the Hoover Dam all the way to Willow Beach in Arizona! This beautiful, 11 mile kayak excursion is a great way to spend a day for the active traveler. You'll get to visit natural sauna caves, hot springs, and have a leisurely self-guided or guided trip down the river in one of the most scenic canyons in America.

    Things You'll Need

    • Reservations through an outfitter: you must obtain your permit through a licensed outfitter to set-in at the base of the Hoover Dam.
    • Kayak, life vest, oars: all available from your chosen outfitter
    • Snacks, plenty of water, and a camera (bring a ziploc for your camera in case you capsize!)
    1. How to Kayak in the Black Canyon

        Reserve your kayak excursion through one of the licensed outfitters shown in the links at the end of this article. If you have experience with a kayak and are confident in your abilities, you may opt for a self-guided tour.

        Arrive the morning of your trip at the appointed meeting spot and don't be late!

        You will leave your vehicle at the meeting spot and ride with the outfitter to the base of the Dam, as this is a controlled access area.

        Black Canyon

        At the base of the Dam, your outfitter will unload the group's kayaks, offer a brief instruction, and you will then being your Colorado kayak adventure through the beautiful Black Canyon!

    Tips & Warnings

    • Don't forget to stop and see the natural sauna caves and hot springs along the river. Most outfitters give you a map and will show you where they are.

    • You can often see the amazing big horn sheep along the sides of the canyon -- take a look!

    • While the temperatures outside will be hot during the late spring and summer, the water will be a comfortable 50 degrees.

    • Bring sunblock and apply it often!
