Hostess gifts are a nice gesture, but when they contribute to the clutter in a home—well, not so nice. Treat your hostess to a clutter-free gift, and you’re sure to receive a sincere “thank you” for your efforts.
Gift an edible. A loaf of homemade bread, a quart of local honey, some produce from your garden, a bag of gourmet coffee--you just can't go wrong with a food gift.
Step2
Pick out flowers or a plant. Bring a bouquet of flowers--or go for something with a longer life--and opt for a potted plant. Choose something suitable for outdoor planting, and you’ll be contributing to the beauty of your hostess’ home, instead of contributing to the clutter.
Step3
Choose a restaurant certificate. Pick up a gift certificate to your hostess' favorite restaurant or--if you don't know her well--one of your favorites. It'll be a great way for her to kick back after all the work that she's put into her party.
Step4
Make a charitable donation. Make a small donation in the hostess' name; then, give her a card that explains your gift.
Step5
Select a fancy bottle of soap or dish liquid. Purchase a bottle (or even a bar) of beautifully packaged soap for the kitchen or bathroom. It's the perfect use-it-up gift to pamper a friend.
Step6
Buy a certificate for a movie rental. Attach a coupon for a movie rental to a box of popcorn, and you'll be giving the gift of relaxation--no clutter there.
Step7
Offer to stay, and help with clean up. Extra hands are always appreciated when it comes time to clean--and this is one gift that doesn't cost a dime.
Tips & Warnings
Keep in mind that the way your wrap a gift can also create clutter. Try to avoid giving gifts in vases, tins and other containers that your hostess may feel bad about tossing.
A simple thank you note after the party is a nice gesture, and doesn't contribute to a lot of clutter.

on 7/19/2008 This is really considerate. Most people don't need another nick-nack around the house. 5 stars
