Things You'll Need:
- Junior Soccer Star
- Box of Tootsie Pops
-
Step 1
Leave the coaching to the coach. Limit your sideline comments to "good job", or "way to go". This is difficult to do, especially if you see something that the coach is missing. However, children need to concentrate on the field, it can be difficult when hearing comments from both sides. If you are having trouble with this step, volunteer to be a coach, it will change your perspective.
-
Step 2
Never make negative comments about other players. The ability of the players on your child's team is beyond your control. If you speak negatively about others, that attitude will be passed on to your child. Keep your comments to yourself.
-
Step 3
Win or lose, always greet your child and their teammates with a positive word at the end of the game. If you saw a problem in the game, now is not the time to bring it up with your child. Before their next practice, point out the problem and help them find a solution.
-
Step 4
Bring a box of Tootsie Pops to your child's games. It is hard to make negative comments with a lollipop in your mouth. Don't be afraid to share with your fellow spectators. You are not the only soccer parent with this problem.
-
Step 5
Above all, have fun. It is important not to cause your child anxiety with your behavior. Relax and youth soccer can be fun for everyone.
