How to Start a Campfire With a Cotton Ball

A campfire can be essential for outdoor cooking, staying warm or just sitting by the fire and relaxing. Getting a campfire started requires having the right amount of fuel to get the fire started. A single cotton ball can be a handy tool to fuel a fire and get it started.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cotton ball
  • Petroleum jelly
  • Firewood
  • Matches
  1. Step 1

    Coat the cotton ball completely with petroleum jelly.

  2. Step 2

    Build a campfire with sticks and other pieces of wood.

  3. Step 3

    Place the petroleum jelly coated cotton ball at the base of the firewood.

  4. Step 4

    Light the cotton ball with a match. The flame from the cotton ball will reach approximately 3 to 4 inches high and will burn continuously for several minutes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cotton Balls covered with petroleum jelly can be stored in an empty film container or other small container until ready to use.
