Many nature walks and trails often require crossing a streambed. Crossing a stream bed can be dangerous and should be done with caution. Before crossing any streambed use following tips to help prevent injuries.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Walking stick
Step1
Look for an area with shallow calm water.
Step2
Use a walking stick or other stick to measure the depth of the water; depth of water can be deceiving.
Step3
Step in shallow water or step on sturdy flat rocks to use as a stepping stone to cross. Always test the stability of a rock before stepping on the rock. Unstable rocks can move or turn and cause you to loose your balance.
Step4
Secure each step before taking the next step.
Step5
Use your walking stick as you cross the streambed to help you maintain your balance.
Step6
Cross with care and caution.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never cross a stream in swift running water.
  • Never cross a stream with muddy water from a recent storm.
  • Never step on a rock that is covered with moss. Moss can be very slippery.
  • Never enter a streambed or cross a streambed if there is the possibility of a flash flood.
