Hummingbird in Home Hummingbird in Home

A spider was spinning a web on our sliding glass doors. This continued for a while. It covered one-half of one of the sliding glass doors. My husband wanted to see just how big it would get. I came home one day to find a hummingbird trapped in the web. So begins the saga.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Scissors
  • Clear head would help
  • Chair
  • Open door
Step1
Spider Web Open the sliding glass door with the spider web. Take a pair of scissors and cut the hummingbird out of the web. (Shutter as you do this!)
Step2
Hummingbird in Flight Take the hummingbird (not moving) to the kitchen counter and begin to cut the web from its wings. Oh my! It's flying! And in my house! It's flight path is erratic and fluctuates between the laundry room and hall lighting fixture.
Step3
Sylvester in Kitchen My broom is of no use. Helpless in the house, I watch as it flies into the kitchen window and hits the floor. Running to get it before Sylvester (my cat), I find it not moving.
Step4
Outside Kitty With inside and outside kitties, I dared not leave it alone. So, I did the next best thing . . .
Step5
Cloudy Day Getaway I took a chair, went outside, (while still holding the little hummingbird) sat under the beautiful skies, and held until it regained consciousness. It looked at me and flew away.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do any surgical procedures on hummingbird spider webs "outside", if possible.
  • Hummingbirds are "not" compatible to in-house conditions.

on 6/17/2008 What a beautiful story! I had one that tangled in lace curtains in my garage. I tried to help it out but slowly lowering the top part of the window thinking it would fly outside. Instead, it dropped down between the two panes of glass! Finally, exhausted I thought it would die so I took a chance and wrapped the end of a yardstick with a soft towel and gently slipped it up to get him free!
