How to Speak to a Small Group

Perhaps you have been asked to teach a Sunday school class of adults or else you've been asked to make a presentation to a charitable organization. Speaking in front of a small group differs from talking to a large group of people. It is a more intimate setting.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
When you are asked to speak, ask the exact topic and the amount of time you will have to speak. Knowing how much time is crucial to preparation.
Step2
Make an outline of your speech. List each main point should be addressed as a highlight, and then the areas you will discuss to illuminate your highlight. The topic might be how to organize a desk, so the highlights could be organizing tools, organizing filing, organizing "to dos" and organizing case files. Beneath each of these highlights, list the methods of organizing you are recommending.
Step3
Once your speech is outlined and you are satisfied, put the basic highlights and one or two words to remind yourself of methods on 3 x 5-inch index cards. You will use these cards in case you forget, but when giving a speech the main goal is to be able to make the presentation without using the cards, even though you have prepared them as an aid.
Step4
When you start to speak, scan the group. Pick one or two people who seem friendly and warm to speak directly to on opposite sides of the group. Even though you will address these people, you will scan the group so everyone feels included. Picking a couple of people to address makes it easier on you, too. Be prepared for questions and know the subject.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may need to have a glass of water nearby. If you have nerves, your mouth may grow dry and you will need the water.
  • Standing at a podium or music stand will give you a place to put those note cards.
  • On occasion in a small group, you will be standing near an easel at the end of a table. This is a very good type of group setting. Again, pick one person on either side of the table and use those people as your focus people.
  • Women should dress in a more tailored outfit. Wearing the color red is always good for a public speaker. Men should wear a shirt and tie and slacks.
  • Remember to prepare note cards in advance.
  • Fear is your biggest enemy. Being prepared and sure of your preparation keeps the load of fear a little lighter.
  • Remember these people have come to hear you and in the majority of cases are not your enemy.
  • Knowing your subject provides you with the ease to answer questions and be prepared even for a small fumble due to nerves. There is nothing wrong in admitting your nerves, either and almost everyone in the room will understand.
