How to Visit Someone in the Hospital

When friends and family are in the hospital, they enjoy having people come to visit. It shows that someone cares enough to take time out of their schedule to spend time with them. Flowers are nice, but personal contact is very meaningful. Sometimes people don't visit in the hospital because they are nervous about what they are supposed to do and say. Here are some general guidelines when visiting someone in the hospital.

    Instructions

      • 1

Remember that the person you are visiting is sick. That's why they are in the hospital. The hospital is there to help sick people rest and recover. The visit should be no longer than 20 minutes. Respect and obey all hospital rules for visiting.

      • 2

Be cheerful. Don't come to visit if you are depressed. Visiting someone in the hospital is meant to cheer them up and give them encouragement. Of course, in critical situations or when the person is experiencing much pain, being cheerful is not appropriate. Sometimes just being there is all that is needed. Bring them comfort and peace. Help the patient stay relaxed.

      • 3

Bring something that will help them remember your visit such as a card, or flowers. A meaningful scripture written on a card is very nice, too. This shows your concern for their welfare.

Stand or sit where the patient can see you easily. Hold their hand or pat their arm if it is appropriate when you visit. If unsure, let the patient initiate the contact. Personal touch is very meaningful. Ask them if there are any updates on their condition. If unsure, ask them what they need for when you pray for them.

      • 5

End the visit with a prayer. Let them know you will continue to pray for them, and if applicable when you plan on visiting again. If they are going to be in the hospital for only a couple of days, one visit is great depending on the relationship between you and the patient.

    Tips & Warnings

    • If you are sick, do not visit. You are not helping them at all by bringing your germs into their hospital room. A phone call will suffice if you can't visit.
