Do you like the designer rooms you see in magazines or the looks you see on the showroom floor but can't afford their lofty price tags? You can easily mirror any look with a little know-how and some helpful tips for a tight budget. Be ready to keep an open mind and a keen eye and you will be well on your way to a designer look in your home while staying within your budget.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Smart shopping is one key element to decorating on a budget. See a look you want, then go to work scouring discount stores. Remember, a clearance or marked down item that is similar but not the right color can be painted or reupholstered. Be creative and keep an open mind when shopping for furniture and accessories. Many times, a scratch and dent item can easily be repaired and you can usually get it for 50 percent or more off the original price. Remember to check out end-of-the-season and going out of business sales, as items may be discontinued but will most likely be heavily discounted.

  2. Step 2

Don't forget yard sales, garage sales and thrift stores. It may be off putting but don't be afraid to get dirty if you want to save money. There is unbelievable savings in refinishing an old piece or recovering an antique chair.

  3. Step 3

Reuse what you already have. Update an old dresser by changing out the hardware or create a grouping of picture frames by painting them the same color. You can easily update a lamp by changing out the shade or change the look of your existing furniture by purchasing slip-covers.

  4. Step 4

Don't be afraid of do-it-yourself projects. If you see a floral arrangement you like, recreate it with supplies from a local craft store. Even the least design savvy can create their own wall art with a little work, a canvas and some craft paint. Remember to be creative when putting together the desired look.

Tips & Warnings
  • Set a spending limit for any project and stick to it.
  • Utilize online resources. There is an abundance of good buys to be found on the Internet.
  • Make sure when you are buying scratch and dent items that the cost of repairs does not outweigh the savings.
