Step 1
Put yourself in their shoes. One situation where it is easy to turn mean is when you're dealing with bad service in the customer service industry. For example, if you are dining in a restaurant and it has been over 40 minutes and you still haven't received food, you will be rightfully upset. But you may want to consider the environment that you're in. Before getting angry with the server, you may want to consider how busy it is. Maybe she has ten tables at once, or maybe it's not even her fault but maybe the kitchen's staff became overwhelmed. Or maybe your server is just having a bad night. If you're out to eat, you should try to relax and kindly ask about when the food will be ready.

Step 2
Making sacrifices for others. Putting others first once in a while can help you feel better about yourself. For example, maybe you are on a subway and you see an elderly person standing because there are no seats. You have one, so it would be very nice of you to give your seat to them. Although you are now standing, you can feel better knowing you did the right thing.

Step 3
Volunteering. Going out of your way to help others in need will help you to realize how well you actually have things. It will help you to forget about your own problems.
