How to Pre-write a Book Review

Writing book reviews is a fun way to encourage students to read for information and express their thoughts clearly. Here's a simple lesson to begin writing a book review.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Have students choose a book they've read and would like to review.

  2. Step 2

    Have students choose two adjective to describe the main character of the book.

  3. Step 3

    Have students choose two adjectives to describe another important character from the book.

  4. Step 4

    Have students choose two adjectives to describe the setting of the book.

  5. Step 5

    Have students choose three words to describe the mood of the book.

  6. Step 6

    Have students describe the sequence of events in the novel using ten words or less.

  7. Step 7

    Have students use all the words they've written so far to write a three or four sentence summary of the book.

  8. Step 8

    Have students add another sentence describing how they feel about the book and why.

  9. Step 9

    With this bare-bones rough draft, students may begin working on a full-fledged review.
