Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Business suit
- Pants with interior suspender buttons
- Silk suspenders with button hole
Step1
Gordon Gecko
Recognize that they will make a comeback. Michael Douglas immortalized suspenders with business attire in the film "Wall Street" which was about the greed and money making schemes there in the 1980s. A lot of Wall Street types, and Wall Street wannabes wore suspenders--many correctly, many incorrectly. With such fashion barometers as the TV series "Mad Men," be prepared for the next wave of suspender mania.
Step2
Proper suspenders
Select proper suspenders. Proper suspenders for business attire are made of silk, not elastic, and have button holes, not clips. Called "braces" in the U.K., suspenders should be coordinated with the color combination of the suit, shirt and especially the tie. They should not be of the exact fabric of the tie, however, nor should a belt be worn with them.
Step3
Pants need interior buttons
Pants require interior buttons. For the suspenders to attach, the pants must have the right number of buttons sewn onto the inside of the waist in the front and the back.
Step4
You wouldn't wear a clip-on tie, would you?
Improper suspenders. Beware of imposters. Elastic suspenders and any suspenders with metal clips should not be worn in a business setting.
Step5
Experiment
Wear with flair. Make a statement with your suspenders. Ditch the jacket and tie.
