If you enjoy Los Cabos but are completely over the tourist scene, here's how to eat with the locals at local restaurants for a more authentic dining experience.

From Quick Guide: Cabo San Lucas Travel Guide
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mexican Pesos
  • Basic Spanish (Most people in Los Cabos speak English)
  • A sense of adventure
  1. Step 1

Book an activity with a recreation company in San Lucas. It doesn't matter what you book, just make it something you enjoy, or want to learn. Surfing, snorkeling, wave runners are all good options.

  2. Step 2

Your tour guide will pick you up at your hotel. These guys are usually very friendly and easy going, and can become an invaluable contact during your trip. Be polite and friendly.

  3. Step 3

Speak Spanish when you can. Depending on your skill level, your guide might cringe and ask you to just stick with English, but he will appreciate your efforts regardless.

  4. Step 4

After your adventure, you'll feel much more comfortable with your guide, as you will have spent the better part of the day with him. Ask your guide if you can take him to lunch or dinner to say thanks for a great day. Tell him the restaurant must be a locals only. Chances are, he'll take you up on it.

  5. Step 5

If you're really adventurous, let your guide order for you. You may end up eating pig ear tacos, but even they are pretty good. If you have any food sensitivities or allergies, stick to what you know and enjoy the local ambiance!

Tips & Warnings
  • Tip tour guides well in Mexico---these guys work very hard.
  • Wear a ton of sunscreen
  • Drink water constantly to avoid dehydration.
  • Be smart: don't go anywhere alone with someone you don't know in Mexico.
  • Don't over drink.

on 12/28/2007 Oh great tips. Sometimes you get to see the little known sites when you go all out for your guide. Thanks.
