Creating a memory box for a loved one is a fun and interesting way for middle school students to practice their writing skills.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A shoebox
  • Markers
  • Crayons
  • One piece of construction paper
  • Ribbon
  • Wrapping paper
  • Scotch tape
  • A pencil

    How to Teach a Memory Box Lesson

  1. Step 1

    Have each student choose a loved one about whom to write.

  2. Step 2

    Have students pick a particular memory involving this person (for example: "Grand Canyon Vacation") and write it on an index card.

  3. Step 3

    Have students write a short paragraph describing the memory under its title on the index card.

  4. Step 4

    Repeat the first three steps until students have seven memory cards (one for each day of the week).

  5. Step 5

    Have students tie their memory cards together with ribbon and place them in the box.

  6. Step 6

    Allow students to decorate their boxes with wrapping paper.

  7. Step 7

    Have students make a card to go with the memory box using construction paper, markers, and crayons.

  8. Step 8

    Give the boxes to the loved ones the students have chosen.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the students don't wrap the box closed while decorating. Their loved one has to be able to open it!
