How to Visit the Hoover Dam
The Hoover Dam was constructed between 1931 and 1936 on the Colorado River, and has been a tourist attraction ever since. It is ranked by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the country's top seven engineering wonders. If you're visiting either Arizona or Nevada, a side trip to the Hoover Dam is worth the time. Hoover Dam is about 35 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The best way to get there is on U.S. Highway 93 from Las Vegas.

Check with the United States Bureau of Reclamation website if you want to drive across the dam. A new bridge opened in 2010 that changed some of the routes and eased previous traffic flow problems. As of 2011, the dam was not open to through traffic. Cars can cross the dam to visit the Arizona viewpoint, but have to turn around and go back into Nevada. There are some vehicle restrictions, and all vehicles must stop for inspection at the Nevada State Route 172 checkpoint.
