Wood panelling can definitely darken and date your home. If you want to change the look of panelling without an expensive reconstruction job follow these steps.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Be sure you really want to paint your panelling. Once you start there is no turning back.

  2. Step 2

With an electric hand sander and a light grade sand paper carefully sand the panelling until the smooth finish is sanded off.

  3. Step 3

Wipe down the panelling with damp rags to remove the dust from sanding so that it won't mix with your paint.

  4. Step 4

Apply a coat or two of a good primer. If your panelling is dark colored you may need to use a heavy duty primer made to hide stains.

  5. Step 5

Paint your panelling the color of your choice. Usually the lighter your color is the larger your room will look. A flat or eggshell finish paint will help your panelling to fade into the background.

  6. Step 6

If desired add a chair rail for an added dimension and to further detract from the panelling effect.
