To many, home-brewing of espresso can be a daunting idea. Well, fret no longer because with this step-by-step tutorial utilizing a Rancilio Silvia, you’ll be brewing like a barista in no time! Espresso is such a wonderful way to start the day, isn’t it? It’s also the perfect mid-afternoon pick-me-up and an ideal way to finish off a delicious meal at home, shared with friends and family. That’s why we’ve created this simple, step-by-step tutorial for you using one of the most popular brands of brewers on the market today – the Rancilio Silvia espresso machine.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A Rancilio Silvia espresso machine
  • Softened Water
  • Finely Ground Espresso or Coffee Beans
  • Milk
  • Coffee mugs or Demitasse cups for serving
  • Thinly sliced lemon rind (optional)

Step1
2a Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine Switches off Make sure that all controls are in the ‘off’ position and plug the machine into a grounded outlet: select a spot on the kitchen counter, island, table, etc., where you will have convenient access to all of the relevant areas of your espresso machine.
Step2
Pour water into the machine’s reservoir up to the fill line being careful not to go past that maximum fill point: most manufacturers will have incorporated a pre-determined mark into the machine’s design for you.
Step3
2b Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine Switch on Turn on your espresso machine.
Step4
4 Remove the Rancilio Silvia Portafilter Remove the portafilter and dose the desired amount of fresh espresso grounds into the basket.
Step5
Tamp the grounds by applying approximately 30-pounds of pressure for best results: Using the tamper, tap the side of the portafilter to release any grounds which may have become lodged inside the rim; repeat the tamp process a second time.
Step6
Rancilio Silvia Portafilter Place the portafilter back into espresso machine: sliding it from left to right will lock it into place under the group.
Step7
Rancilio Silvia Brew Button On Press the brew button to start the espresso-preparation process. Normal brew time is around 25 seconds for a double shot (2 oz.).
Step8
Top off each cup with a touch of froth:
– Fill your frothing pitcher with milk to it’s half-way point;
– Insert the pitcher under the steam wand on an angle;
– Turn on the steam wand and slowly lower the pitcher so that the wand's tip rests just below the surface of the milk;
– Ensure that the temperature of your milk does not exceed 160 degrees;
– DO NOT motion the pitcher in an up and down manner during the frothing process as that will create large, unsightly bubbles in your froth and deter from its thickness.
Step9
Spoon the froth onto your espresso, and enjoy your delicious, freshly-brewed, home-made cappuccino!

Tips & Warnings

  • Caring for your Espresso Machine a. Priming the machine for first-time usage: Place a larger-sized cup or bowl underneath the group head and turn on the brew switch. Allow about 16-ounces of water to dispense into the container as this will ‘prime’ the machine for highest quality results. Refill the reservoir with fresh water.
  • Routine Maintenance and Cleaning: Always make certain to unplug your espresso machine before performing any type of cleaning. a. To lessen cleaning time, always utilize softened water to brew, as hard water tends to more quickly create mineral deposit build up within the machine’s internal mechanisms. b. Clean the drip tray after every brew. c. Using a dampened, soft cloth or sponge, wipe the steam wand after every usage. d. Remove and rinse the dispersion screen. e. Using a flathead screwdriver, remove the shower screen and clean the group head with a nylon brush. When reinstalling the screen, be certain not to over-tighten the screw. f. At a minimum of an annual basis, decalcify your machine using a recommended agent of your choice.
  • Serving Suggestions Pre-heat serving cups by utilizing your machine’s steam wand to dispense a small amount of boiling water into them prior to commencement of the brewing process. Set the cups aside, letting them stand with the hot water and empty just prior to dispensing the espresso. Try this traditional serving choice offered at many fine restaurants: • Remove the rind of one lemon. • Scrape out extra flesh up to the pith, and thinly slice the rind into 1/4 or 1/2” wedges. • Place next to the serving cup, on the saucer and provide a demitasse spoon. • Using the rounded end of the spoon, create indentations on the underside of the rind and drop into the cup for an extra-special, classic ‘kick’ to your espresso.
