Planning a vacation with a toddler can be frustrating and overwhelming. Or, it can be a fantastic adventure. The difference will be in your attitude, planning skills, and expectations. Here are a few tips to plan a successful vacation with a toddler from a mother that has been there many times.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

You will need to decide where you want to go. Choose a place that all members of the family will enjoy. This will help to keep all adults, teenagers, and toddlers happy.

  2. Step 2

Research the area through the internet. Find out what activities are available for each member of the family. You will also be able to research hotels and check customer reviews to find a hotel that works for your family.

  3. Step 3

Plan activities. Set a general schedule of when each activity will occur. Be sure to include down time or nap times for the smallest members of the family. This will keep the other activities easier to cope with and enjoyable.

  4. Step 4

Decide what needs to be packed. Write down your list and add to it several days before you start packing. Be sure to include enough clothing, plus extra for each member. Also include sunscreen, hats, coats, rain jackets, umbrellas, or any other seasonal product as needed.

  5. Step 5

Print out directions to your hotel and local activities. If you don't have a map of the area, get one just in case. Keep all directions together with any tickets or hotel reservation information.

  6. Step 6

While packing, be sure to keep an extra set of clothing and diapers if required either in a separate bag, or on top. You never know when an accident will happen!

  7. Step 7

To keep your toddler happy and comfortable, be sure to include a special blanket or stuffed animal. An item from home makes it a bit easier to sleep in a new place for little ones.

Tips & Warnings
  • Research your hotel area for nearest restaurants so you won't be searching for a place to eat with a screaming toddler.
  • Bring snacks and drinks to all activities to keep your toddlers tummy full.
  • Don't schedule too much or your child will become overwhelmed which may lead to melt downs. Plan activities so there is some down time.
  • Don't forget the special blanket, pacifier, or stuffed animal!
