Things You’ll Need:
How to Prepare for an Amniocentesis
Step1
First, find out why you are having an amnio. There are many reasons including finding out gender (although this is not a common "only" reason), determining some abnormalities, checking lung development (most likely when you are scheduling to deliver early), as well as checking fluid levels.
Step2
Ask about the risks involved. Depending on the stage of pregnancy you are in there may be a small risk of miscarriage. There may also be other risks such as infection. Doctors take every precaution possible to avoid these risks, but they do exist. That is why you will most likely be asked to sign a consent form.
Step3
Before your appointment, you may want to take some pain medication. Tylenol is a good choice, as doctors do not worry about the effects of Tylenol on the unborn child.
Step4
If you are afraid of needles and want to distract yourself, grab a magazine or book to read during the procedure. Distraction may lessen your fear and without fear, the pain may be less.
Step5
The day of your appointment, be sure to wear loose clothing. They will be using an ultrasound to guide the needle and loose clothing will make it easier and more comfortable.
Step6
If at anytime during the procedure your have a question, ask. The doctors and ultrasound technician are there to answer your questions. If your pain is higher than you expected, let them know and try to distract yourself some more.
Step7
Finally, try not to stress too much. Stress increases pain and is unhealthy. Of course, this is much easier to say! As long as you understand why you are having an amniocentesis and the risks involved then you are prepared.
