Before the Move: A. Perform an assessment of your business. If you maintain inventory make a detailed list of what is being taken, donated, or sold. B. Evaluate your current financial status and marketing strategies. C. If possible find out as much as you can about the area you are going to on and off base if applicable. (Newspapers, community mags, networking groups, Internet sites and forums, business support and chamber of commerce.) D. If applicable plan your going away sale.
Step2
After the Move: A. Contact your local legal office and to see what the particulars are at your new installation or at least have them point you in the right direction. You will probably want to contact your local city/county authorities if you will be conducting your business off base as well to make sure that you are within local guidelines. If applicable talk with landlords too so that there are no surprises. B. Depending on what you were able to find out about your new location begin compiling information. The Family Support can also be a good place to find local area information so contact them also. C. Revise your business plan to include new marketing strategies and financial projections. D. Order your new marketing materials and establish your immediate network base.
Step3
Get out there and get busy!
Tips & Warnings
One last tip here is that I always purchase a notebook that is dedicated to things I need or want to keep handy when we first begin planning our move. On our move to England I was able to find a small three section notebook with pockets. I used one for our personal information, our housing, and the last one was for my business. It is great for writing down contacts, and products I saw while out shopping and for keeping brochures, fliers and business cards collected while out and about.
