Freelance writing on blogs can be a great way to earn an income writing, and can establish you as an expert in your industry or area of interest. It can also lead to writing assignments in traditional media if you write for highly popular blogs.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Read lots of blogs. This is important and serves a couple of purposes. The first is to familiarize yourself with blogs in general. The second is to figure out who the major blogs are in your area or interest or expertise.

  2. Step 2

Start your own blog. This will basically serve as your portfolio. I would recommend hosting this on your own domain, but a free site like Wordpress.com or Blogger.com is also fine. Keep your blog updated regularly (at least a couple times a week) to show that you can be consistent.

  3. Step 3

Write anywhere else you can. Any site that allows you to post your own articles is a good place to start (just make sure you know what rights you're signing away in the process). Anything you can do to get your name out there is a plus.

  4. Step 4

Once you have a few months worth of experience, see if you can write a guest post for some of the larger and more popular blogs in your industry. Often these won't be paid at first, but are mainly to build your writing resume. Anytime you write a guest post, make sure to link to it from your own blog.

  5. Step 5

At this point, start applying for paid blogging jobs. ProBlogger's job board is definitely the best place to find paid blogging jobs. Make sure you include a link to your blog, and mention any particularly pertinent guest posts you have done.

  6. Step 6

Apply for at least 3-4 blogging positions each week. Be persistent and follow up on every job you apply for. Also continue to offer to guest post for other blogs, and start charging for it as you build up more experience.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't be intimidated because a blog is particularly popular or well-known. It never hurts to apply for a blogging job.
  • Try to keep your own personal blog very professional (but show your true writing style). Keep in mind that anything you write there will be seen by prospective employers.
