When you bring a new baby home, everything in your life seems different and more complicated. Exercise is often the last thing on your mind. If jogging was a part of your life before children, you can still incorporate running into your new life. Purchasing a jogging stroller and bringing your baby with you on a run is a great way to keep exercise a part of your busy life. Learning to jog safely with your baby will bring rewards to both you and your child.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A three-wheeled jogging stroller
  • Appropriate clothing and blankets for child
  • A desire the get back in shape
  1. Step 1

Make sure the stroller has a quality, secure five point harness system for the child. It is important that the buckles are easy to close and that the harness is easily adjusted.

  2. Step 2

Look for good head and neck support for infants. You should never run with an infant under three months of age and your child should be able to fully support his or her head. Also make sure the seat can recline. Some strollers have kits you can purchase that allow the stroller to be adapted to fit an infant car seat.

  3. Step 3

Check the brake system and make sure there is a hand brake that is easily accessible. There should also be a brake lock which is used when the stroller is parked.

  4. Step 4

The stroller should have a good suspension system that lessons bumps and vibrations. Some strollers are even made for off road use.

  5. Step 5

Fold and unfold the stroller to test the locking mechanism. The last thing you want is the stroller to collapse while your child is sitting in it.

  6. Step 6

Consider the weight of the stroller. The average weight is about 20 pounds, which doesn’t include the baby and whatever gear you bring. Also check the carrying capacity of the stroller. You want something you can use for many years.

  7. Step 7

Determine how easily the stroller folds up and assess your storage needs for the stroller. Decide where you will store it at your home and make sure you can fit it into your car. Some strollers have quick release wheels which makes it much easier to fit into small cars.

  8. Step 8

Prices generally start at $200 and can go over $600 for double capacity strollers. You can sometimes get deals by purchasing last years models.

  9. Step 9

You can find jogging strollers at your local running store or do a search online.

  10. Step 10

Make sure to protect your child from the elements. Remember that in cold weather they are not generating as much heat as you are and will need more layers of clothing. Many strollers have awnings that can be pulled down to shield from the sun, wind, and rain. Some strollers have addition covers than can be purchased.

  11. Step 11

Take it easy at first. Jogging with a stroller is more difficult and takes some getting used to. Slow your pace down until you get used to it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the stroller is locked when unfolded.
  • Do not hang things from the handle. The stroller can be top heavy and tip backwards easily.
  • Always use the brake lock when the stroller is not being pushed.
  • Use the wrist strap with caution. It is useful when running downhill to prevent you from losing control. The problem is if you fall, you can pull the stroller backward with you.
