How to Live with a Dog in a High-Rise Apartment Building

Today many people, especially urban dwellers, live in apartment buildings out of want or need. And many pet suppliers and landlords alike are catching on to how much these high-rise tenants love their dogs.

• Leash
• Dog bed
• Dog crate
• Dog toys
• Towels
• Lease with pet-friendly provision

1. Find an apartment that is dog friendly.

2. Research whether your dog's breed is one that does okay in confined spaces.

3. Purchase an indoor doggy bathroom (it usually looks like a large patch of grass on top of a kitty litter-type substance).

4. Walk your dog around the halls, outdoor areas and any common living spaces before signing a lease to make sure your dog is comfortable and quiet in the environment.

5. Find the quickest and easiest way to get your dog outside, should he have a bathroom emergency.

Tips & Warnings

• Hang out in outdoor common spaces with your dog in order to meet and socialize with others who have pets. Try to work out a schedule with them if you work full time. Perhaps they can take your dog with them on walks during the week if you take theirs on weekend or nighttime walks
• Remember that not everyone likes dogs so make sure that your dog's behavior is appropriate for a high-rise building. Get habits like barking, jumping or scratching under control before moving in
• If someone doesn't like your dog remember that it's their right. They live in the building too. Keep your dog on extra good behavior in their presence because a lease is only for a certain period of time and after that a landlord can choose to not renew yours should he hear that your dog is a problem or annoyance
