How to Behave While Visiting the Czech Republic

If you want to feel like less of a tourist while visiting Prague or other towns in the Czech Republic, there are certain ways you can behave. Master just a few of these tips and you’ll feel more accepted by the locals.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Learn to say “Prosim.” The Czechs use it in a variety of situations, such as ‘excuse me,’ ‘please,’ and ‘thank you.’
Step2
The Czech demeanor is more serious than the American demeanor. Try not to be bubbly or to smile too much. A more serious, dry tone is considered less annoying to Czech people.
Step3
Try and study maps and itineraries before hitting the street—a lot of people in Prague speak English, so ask someone to point you in the right direction instead of breaking out your tourist map.
Step4
Buy some of the locals a beer at the bar—it’s a great way to make Czech friends.
Step5
Ask your new friends at the bar where the locals go to eat and drink.

Tips & Warnings

  • Watch your belongings, as there are pickpockets working the transportation system and the crowded tourist areas.
