Making a cookie cutter puzzle is a good way to teach shapes, objects and colors.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Jigsaw
  • two pieces of plywood
  • 5 or 6 cookie cutters
  • 5 or 6 knobs to glue on puzzle pieces opt.
  • non-toxic paint
  • paintbrush
  • wood glue
  • pencil for tracing shapes
  1. Step 1

Trace the 5 or 6 shapes of your choice from the cookie cutters onto one of the plywood pieces. Trace the same shape on the second piece but cut out the shape with the jig saw.

  2. Step 2

Take the plywood piece with the traces shape only and paint the shape. Choose primary or bright colors to help identify pieces. Paint the pieces the same color as they traced shape. Dry thoroughly.

  3. Step 3

Glue with wood glue the knobs onto the puzzle pieces that were cut out of the plywood. Glue the plywood with the cut out shape onto the plywood with the painted shape and dry thoroughly. When glue is dry place cut out shapes with knobs onto matching painted shapes. Voila a cookie cutter puzzle. Any shapes can be used to adjust to childs age. Try using a themes such as food, things that move etcetera or make up a story like their favorite book and trace shapes that go with book from cookie cutters.

Tips & Warnings
  • Var. Children that are older like the more themed and difficult pieces and smaller puzzle pieces. Children smaller do well adding the knobs to the puzzle pieces where older children do not need this.
  • Var. Varnish the wooden top piece first if desired before cutting the shape out.
  • An adult needs to supervise the use of the jigsaw.
