How to Make Free-Standing Speaker Stands

Buying speaker stands can be an expensive purchase with today's technology. Many times, the product you see in the store can be duplicated or improved upon using only a few easy-to-get materials which will cost a fraction of the price. To help get your surround sound system looking and sounding its best, make your own free-standing speaker stands.

Things You’ll Need:

• (4) 10"x10" squares of plywood
• (4) 12"x12" squares of plywood
• (16) plastic furniture feet with rug grabbers
• (16) wooden railing posts
• (32) 2" wood screws
• (16) 1/2" wood screws
• drill
• screwdrivers
• sand paper
• circular saw (if wood is not purchased pre-cut)

1. Purchase the materials listed above. Then you will have to cut the plywood into the proper sized pieces. Usually, you can have someone at the home improvement store make the cuts for you if you do not have a circular saw at home.
2. The smaller pieces of plywood are going to be the part of the speaker stand where the speaker will sit. At each of the four corners, measure in one inch and drill a small hole through the plywood.
3. Next, drill a tiny hole in the ends of each of the railing posts.
4. Insert the phillips head screwdriver bit in the drill and screw the posts to the top piece of plywood using the 2" wood screws. Be careful not to over-screw and split the wood.
5. With all four posts screwed to the top of the speaker stand, place the posts on the larger piece of plywood. Be sure to center the top part of the stand on the base so it stands even. Trace the posts where they rest on the bottom piece of wood. Then use the drill to make tiny holes in the center of the traced areas.
6. Screw the bottom base to the posts. You should now be able to stand the speaker stand upright. Test it to make sure that it is standing level and not subject to fall over.
7. Now, turn the speaker stand upside down so that you are looking at the underneath side of the base. Fasten the carpet grabbers to the base using the 1/2" wood screws, one in each corner. This will give the speaker stand a better hold on your carpet.
8. Lastly, just sand the piece with sand paper. If you wish, you can varnish the wood, paint it to match your decor or simply leave it natural. Follow the instructions for the remaining three speaker stands and you will have a nice, home-made set of speaker stands that your friends will think you paid a fortune for!
