Three of the main ingredients that lead to weight gain are salt, fat, and sugar. So, in order to stay within the guidelines of my diet, maintain my weight, and still enjoy my favorite food – pizza; I decided to make my own low salt, low fat and low sugar pizza. The taste is terrific and I satisfy my taste for pizza!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 ready-made pizza crust (there are several brands – pick the one lowest in salt content)
  • Light Olive oil and yellow cornmeal for the crust – if the directions call for this.
  • 1- 8-ounce can of tomato sauce – no salt added
  • 1 package of turkey Italian sausage (I love the sweet Italian turkey sausage)
  • 1 package of shredded Parmesan cheese (this is the lowest in fat content)
  • Your favorite toppings like mushroom, pepper, and onion (stay away from pepperoni!)
  • Also, if you don’t have oregano and basil in your spice cabinet you will need to purchase those two spices.
  1. Step 1

Actually, this pizza has all of the main ingredients in regular pizza except that the ingredients are low in salt, fat, and sugar. When you shop for the ingredients for your pizza be sure to read the labels carefully and buy products that have the lowest content of those three ingredients.

  2. Step 2

Your shopping list will consist of the following items:
1 ready-made pizza crust (there are several brands – pick the one lowest in salt content)
Light Olive oil and yellow cornmeal for the crust – if the directions call for this.
1- 8-ounce can of tomato sauce – no salt added
1 package of turkey Italian sausage (I love the sweet Italian turkey sausage)
1 package of shredded Parmesan cheese (this is the lowest in fat content)
Your favorite toppings like mushroom, pepper, and onion (stay away from pepperoni!)
Also, if you don’t have oregano and basil in your spice cabinet you will need to purchase those two spices.

  3. Step 3

You will need to cook the sausage. I find the easiest thing to do is to make the sausage a day ahead of time. I buy the links of sausage; put them in a baking dish, set the oven to 350 degrees and bake them for 60 minutes (add a small amount of water or wine to the baking dish so they don’t stick.) Once they are cooled you can remove the skin and crumble the sausage in a bowl and store until you are ready to assemble your pizza.

  4. Step 4

First you will have to make the sauce, just open the can of tomato sauce, put it in a small bowl and add your spices to taste. A couple pinches of oregano and basil should suffice.

  5. Step 5

If you are going to put pepper and onion on top of your pizza you will have to cut and slice them and have them ready to add to your pizza topping.

  6. Step 6

Read the directions on the prepared pizza crust. The one I use calls for you to oil a pizza pan and then put some yellow corn meal on the pan. The crust is also coated with oil. Use light olive oil.

  7. Step 7

Preheat the oven and assemble your pizza (sauce, sausage, cheese, and any additional toppings.) Pop it in the oven and be ready to enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • It may seem like a lot of work when you can just buy a frozen pizza and pop it in the oven. But, if you are serious about keeping your weight down and still enjoy the occasional pizza you will enjoy the fruits of your labor! The directions are for a sausage pizza but use your imagination and make your favorite pizza – just remember to choose ingredients that are low in salt, fat, and sugar.
