How to Make a Ploughman's Lunch

The Ploughman's Lunch is an English tradition that is a staple meal for many. It's usually accompanied by a tall glass of lager or ale form a brewpub, but you can enjoy it on its own as a snack as well. Learn how to put together this unique but tasty meal, and make it a part of your weekly menu!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 2 slices Cheddar Cheese
  • 2 slices Stilton Cheese
  • 3 slices Wheat or White Bread
  • 1 teaspoon of Butter
  • 1 slice of Brie Cheese
  • 1 Hard Boiled Egg
  • 2-3 Beetroot slices
  • 1 tablespoon Pickled onions
  • 2 tablespoons Branston pickle

Step1
Cut the crusts from the bread and discard them.
Step2
Spread the butter on one side of each slice and lay each slice with the butter side face up, side by side.
Step3
Place all cheese slices on one piece of bread, followed by a spoonful of branston pickle.
Step4
Slice the hard boiled egg and place on the second slice of bread. Add the spoonful of pickled onions.
Step5
Place the second slice on top of the first, face up.
Step6
Place the beetroot slices on the final layer, and position it face down on the sandwich.
Step7
Cut the squares diagonally into triangles and serve!

Tips & Warnings

  • You can turn the sandwich into a platter by separating the ingredients onto a plate and eating a few bites of each item
  • The Ploughman's Lunch sandwich can be made with either two or three slices of bread
  • If you're packing the lunch for the day, make sure you put it into a cool container or use an ice pack to keep the cheese fresh
  • Branston pickle can be found at many British food stores, natural foods markets, or purchased online
