How to Avoid Seasonal Blues

During the winter months, it can be really easy to fall into a funk. The days are short, it's too cold to spend much time outside, and with all of those tempting sweets around our waistlines often expand. Avoid the wintertime blues by staying healthy and having fun.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Exercise at least three times a week in order to stay healthy, sleep better, and release those good-mood endorphins. Cardiovascular exercise will get your heart rate going, which is really important when the days are short and your body naturally feels more sluggish. Exercise can include dance, Tai Chi, yoga, gymnastics, skating, skiing, or anything that makes your body feel active and alive.
Step2
Eat well, but don't overeat. When it's cold outside, it's easy to succumb to unhealthy comfort foods, but unless you're eating a balanced diet these foods won't make you feel better for long. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and include broth based soups with vegetables in order to further increase your antioxidant intake without greatly increasing your calorie count.
Step3
Laugh as much as you possibly can. Studies have shown that even pretending to laugh can help your mood--so if you find yourself in a funk, laugh out loud! Look for social events that will lift your spirits and find opportunities to be goofy and have fun.
Step4
Wear bright colors and other things that make you feel good. If you feel good in your clothing, it will show through in your mood. When the days are short there is enough darkness--so throw your dark clothing in the back of the closet and find cheery fabrics.
