How to Avoid Gossip

How to Avoid Gossip thumbnail
If a known gossiper tries to share information, change the subject.

Gossip can be exciting, fun -- and dangerous. Spreading or hearing information about others can give you a temporary boost from sharing information that no one else has, or hearing about someone else. But gossip can create an unpleasant atmosphere at work, school or in social situations. You may be spreading or hearing only half-truths, or outright lies that have the power to hurt the subject. And if the gossiper is talking about others, you can bet that he's talking about you too. To be on the safe side, use a few techniques to avoid gossip altogether.

Instructions

    • 1

When a person approaches you with gossip, change the subject. If she continues, state "I don't feel comfortable discussing that."

    • 2

If you hear gossip, despite not seeking it out, do not spread it. Let the "information sharing" end with you.

    • 3

If you're the subject of gossip, talk directly with the person spreading it. Ask her to talk to you directly if she has questions.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you fail the first time you hear gossip and find yourself repeating it, try harder the next time. With practice and time, it will get easier.

  • You may loose friendships with people who likes to gossip. But remember if they like to gossip, chances are that they also gossip about you. Is this the type of friends you want to have?
