How to Strategically Light a Deck or Patio

Trying to create the right ambiance for your next outdoor dinner party? If you want to create a warm light throughout the deck or patio to ensure your guests have a memorable evening, here are a few tips through which to do it.

Things You’ll Need:

• White, already contained, non-scented votive candles
• White twinkle lights (such as Christmas lights)
• Citronella candles

1. If you have a deck, you can use white Christmas lights to give your deck a beautiful glow. Simply string the lights around the railing of your deck, weaving it carefully around the top and through each rail.
2. Another option with your deck is to purchase unscented glass votive candles at your local craft store. (One national chain sells them in boxes of 16) You can then place each candle strategically on your deck, tables, railings, and other flat areas on your deck.
3. Citronella candles should be used to keep the bugs away, but you can still find candles contained within beautiful holders. Some citronella candles come in ceramic bowls; others come in beautiful glass containers. Choose a few that you believe will beautify your outdoor living space and place them strategically around the deck to keep the bugs away!

Tips & Warnings

• Candles and white Christmas lights are one option--if you want something more festive, choose colored lights instead.
• Try to use the lighting to create a theme for your outdoor living space.
• Take care to use outdoor lights if you choose lighting over candles.
• Keep the candles out of the way of children.
• Do not forget to blow out the candles when you are finished using your outdoor space.
• Store the candles in a weather-safe environment when not in use to prolong the life and use of your candles.
