It's quick and easy to knit a warm scarf with thick, bulky yarn. They are great to keep or give as gifts.

From Quick Guide: Learning to Knit
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bulky weight yarn - two skeins usually
  • Knitting needles (size 15)
  • Crochet hook
  1. Step 1

Hold two strands of a thick, warm yarn together. Treat the strands as one as you work. This is just to double the weight of your yarn and give you more bulk in your finished scarf.

  2. Step 2

Cast on 12 to 15 stitches onto your knitting needles. See eHow How To article "How to Cast On in Knitting Using a Knit On Method" for directions on casting on. The number of stitches cast on can be adjusted based on how wide of a scarf is desired. Remember stitch will look like two because the yarn is doubled.

  3. Step 3

Knit the first row and every row thereafter until the scarf is at the desired length.

  4. Step 4

Finish the edge by knitting two stitches onto your right needle. Pick up the first one with your left needle. Bring the stitch over the second one and drop it off of both needles.

  5. Step 5

You should now have one stitch on your right needle. Knit another stitch to again have two on the right needle. Pick up the first stitch and again drop it over the second and off both needles.

  6. Step 6

Repeat step five until just one stitch remains on the right needle and none are on the left. Then cut your yarn leaving a four inch tail and pull it tightly through the remaining loop.

  7. Step 7

Using a crochet hook, weave the remaining yarn tail back and forth through the knitting to hide it.

Tips & Warnings
  • This is an easy pattern, but it can be tricky working with two strands of yarn. Remember to keep seeing the two strands as one and knitting them as one.
  • Count your stitches on each row along the way to make sure you don't add a stitch.
