The Stockinette Stitch in Knitting is called for in many patterns, especially sweaters. It is a pattern of alternating knitted and purled rows.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Knitting needles
  • yarn
  1. Step 1

    Cast on as many stitches as needed for your pattern or project. See eHow How To article "How to Cast On in Knitting Using the Knit On Method" for directions on casting on.

  2. Step 2

    Knit the first row. For directions on the knit stitch see the eHow How To article "How to Knit in Garter Stitch."

  3. Step 3

    Purl the second row. For directions on the purl stitch, see the eHow How To article "How to Make the Purl Stitch in Knitting."

  4. Step 4

    Repeat steps two and three until the project is the correct length, or all the rows in the pattern have been completed. You should have alternating rows of knit and purl stitches.
