After you master the knit stitch, the purl stitch is the next stitch to tackle. All but the most basic knitting patterns require a purl stitch.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Knitting needles
  • Yarn
  1. Step 1

Cast on the desired number of stitches on your left knitting needle. See the eHow How To article "How to Cast on in Knitting Using the Knit On Method" for cast on instructions.

  2. Step 2

Pull the yarn to the front of the needles. The yarn should always be in front of the needles for the purl stitch.

  3. Step 3

Insert the right needle from right to left through the front of the first loop on the left needle. Wrap the yarn around the right needle and pull it through the loop on the left needle.

  4. Step 4

Use the right needle to pull the loop completely off the left needle. The new stitch should now be on the right needle.

  5. Step 5

Continue steps three and four until the desired number of purl stitches are complete.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always remember to keep the yarn in front of the needles.
