Knit in Garter Stitch
Knit in Garter Stitch

In knitting, the garter stitch refers to the fabric and texture you get by knitting every row.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • knitting needles
  • yarn
  1. Step 1

Cast on the desired number of stitches on your left needle using whatever method you like best. The knit on method is one of the easiest ways to cast on. For details on this method see the eHow article "How to Cast On in Knitting using the Knit On Method."

  2. Step 2

The cast on stitches should be on the needle in your left hand. Take the needle in your right hand and insert the tip through the front of the first loop on the left needle from left to right. The right needle should be crossing behind the left one. Your yarn should always be coming from behind the needles.

  3. Step 3

Wrap the yarn around the tip of the right needle and pull it through the loop on the left needle. Use the right needle to pull the loop completely off the left needle.

  4. Step 4

Repeat steps three and four until all the stitches are on the right needle and the row is complete.

  5. Step 5

Switch hands and put the needle with the stitches now on it in your left hand. Put the empty needle in your right hand. Repeat step five to finish a new row.

  6. Step 6

Make as many rows as you need for your project.

Tips & Warnings
  • Garter stitch makes nice scarves because it does not curl at the edges when complete.
