"Casting on" in knitting refers to the process of getting loops on your needle to knit with. There are several different cast on methods. One of the quickest and easiest is sometimes called the "knitting on" method.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Knitting needles
  • yarn
Step1
Make a slip knot by holding the yarn between your thumb and index finger to make a loop. Pull the yarn coming from the skein through the loop to make a loose knot with an adjustable loop. Place this loop on the knitting needle in your left hand.
Step2
Insert the tip of the needle in your right hand through the loop on the left needle from left to right. Loop the yarn over the right needle and pull it up through the loop on the left needle.
Step3
Use the left needle to go around in front of the new loop on the right needle. Push the left needle tip through the loop on the right needle from front to back. Use the left needle to pull the loop off of the right needle and keep it on the left one.
Step4
Repeat steps two and three until you have cast on the desired number of stitches for your project. All of your cast on stitches should be on your left needle.
