SF Public Transport is the way to go!

Even locals have a time maneuvering vehicles over the hilly terrain on San Francisco. You can enjoy every area of San Francisco without setting foot in the rental car place, save money and do something great for the environment!

From Quick Guide: Subways Resource Guide
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A Transit Map of San Francisco
  • A little bit of planning
  • Comfortable footwear
  1. Step 1

Go to the kiosk on Powell Street in downtown San Francisco and buy a tourist "Passport" for public transit. This will allow you to ride the buses, subways and cable cars without having to pay cash every time you step on.

  2. Step 2

Buy a transit map, sold at drugstores and transit booths, or go to the Public Transit website (www.transit.511.org.) These are invaluable resources for getting around more efficiently.

  3. Step 3

Consider walking. San Francisco is a beautiful city (most proud locals will tell you)and getting by on foot is an easy and healthy alternative to waiting in the long lines for the cable cars. Most locals don't go near the cable cars, but rather stick to the buses and walking.

  4. Step 4

Adventurous? Rent a bike! There are many bicycle rental shops in San Francisco; it's an inexpensive and fun way to see the city. You can even ride across the Golden Gate Bridge, and have lunch in Sausalito. Don't worry about riding back to your hotel; there are ferries that can take you back!

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask for help. Most San Franciscans are proud of their city and are more than happy to help you with directions or information.
  • Take your time walking up hills. Locals know it's all about pace!
  • Wear comfortable shoes for walking. High heels are for taxis, not Lombard Street!
  • NEVER buy tickets for transport off of a person who approaches you. It's against the law.
  • NEVER jump off of a cable car. It's dangerous and could land you in hot water with the conductor.
