Pretzels, alcohol, overprocessed food: while traveling might be good for your soul, getting to your destination could be hazardous to your diet! Here is a quick and easy snack mix to take along, and some tips to help you stay healthy and feel great on the plane.

From Quick Guide: Come Fly With Me
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ziploc Bags
  • Raw Almonds
  • Raisins, Cranberries or pitted dates
  • Cinnimon Life Cereal or Chex cereal (preferably -multi grain)
  1. Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with a silpat or parchment paper. Spread 1/2 cup of almonds out onto the sheet and toast for about 10 minutes, or until you can smell their toasty goodness. Remove from oven and allow to cool.

  2. Step 2

Toss almonds into a Ziploc bag with equal parts dried fruit and cereal. This combination provides a significant amount of protein and calcium, along with a host of other vitamins (E, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus). This is a far better bet than any over salted airplane snack.

  3. Step 3

If the mix is too much hassle, try to put fresh fruit or a nutrition bar into your carry on. While these ideas won't replace meals, they can prevent becoming too hungry and overindulging in less healthy options.

Tips & Warnings
  • Water: Know it, love it, drink it.
  • Preorder a low sodium or low fat meal. Vegetarian options usually have fresher produce.
  • Read nutritional information on any packaged food. Being aware is half the battle.
  • Alcohol: Wait until you land to imbibe.
  • Salted Snacks: Pass on them and eat your healthy stash instead!
