How to Get a Botched Home Project Fixed on the DIY Network

Have you attempted a do-it-yourself home improvement project that turned out to be more than you could handle? If that's the case, think about applying to the DIY Network to be featured on "DIY to the Rescue," which is looking for homeowners for its 2007/2008 shows.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • A valid home improvement project that you unsuccessfully tried to complete on your own.
Step1
The first thing you should do if you're considering applying to be on the show is to find a neighbor within walking distance from you who would also like to get a home improvement project fixed. The DIY Network wants to videotape both projects at the same time, for the sake of expediency.
Step2
Make sure that you or your neighbor has a garage or fully-covered outdoor workspace that can be used for building during the shoot. At least one homeowner from each home must participate in the repair project during the three days needed to complete the project and tape the show.
Step3
Go to the DIY Network website and click on the "Be on DIY" link. You will see invitations to be on the network's various home improvement shows. Click on the link to "DIY to the Rescue."
Step4
Download and/or print the "DIY to the Rescue" application and fill it out. Fortunately, this application is relatively brief, compared to many other TV audition applications. It basically asks you for information about you, your family members, and your project that needs fixing or completion.
Step5
Save and print a copy of the application for yourself. Then take photos of your project to help the producers see what's wrong and what needs improvement. They specifically ask you to submit 2 to 3 wide photos of each room or project area, and a recent photo of you and your family. If you have access to a video camera, you can mail a tape that features your home and your project, but it's optional. Generally, though, producers say videos usually give individuals a leg up on the competition. DVD is the preferred format for your video, but they do accept VHS and mini-DV tapes.
Step6
Email or mail your application and photos, and mail your tape. The email address for submitting the application and photos online is: dttr@rivr.com. The mailing address for the show is:
