Although they have long been recognised as man’s best friend, dogs have also often been viewed as a runner’s worst enemy. However, within running circles, many now realize that canines make ideal running companions as well as enthusiastic team-mates in the sport of cani-cross or canine cross country running.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • A faithful hound
  • Running shoes
  • Harness for dog
  • Bum bag/fanny pack
  • Strong and lengthy lead

Step1
Canine cross country running is a team sport, so ensure you choose your running mate wisely. Understand your dog's limitations prior to hitting the trails.
Step2
Find a quiet off-road area with good facilities, for both humans and canines. Woodlands are ideal as they're shadier so cooler for your dog. A location with a river or pond will give your dog a chance to cool off afterwards.
Step3
Warm up is essential for both dog and runner before running. A brisk walk will get your heart pumping and your muscles ready for the run ahead.
Step4
While you can simply run with your dog on a collar and lead, this can put both you and your dog at risk of injury. Use a durable harness on your dog and connect it to your bum bag/fanny pack using a long, strong cord. This allows you to run hands-free.
Step5
After your run, ensure both you and your pooch cool down and rehydrate with refreshments.

Tips & Warnings

  • More advanced runners can buy harnesses and bungee-type cords from specialist suppliers
  • Ensure you and your dog are both well-hydrated
  • If you aren't super-fit, don't worry! Just walking your dog to start with will allow you both a great day out and a healthy one too!
  • Exercising your hound in the summer months can be strenuous for both of you, so this sport is best done in the cooler months
  • The sport should not be done with dogs under 12 months old to avoid injury
